Introduction to Power Line Sentry Cutout Covers

So, first and foremost –  


Did you know that most power line cutout covers DO NOT cover the energized arcing horns?  


Crazy, right?  


Arcing horns are obviously energized, so that’s reason enough to want them covered. But also, because most cutout covers available on the market only cover the top portion of the cutout (and while this does help lower the risk of squirrel related outages on the cutout), the risk of avian electrocution and subsequent power outages actually increases.

The reason why avian related cutout outages are increased when the arcing horns are not covered is that the shortened cover acts like a child’s slide on a playground – a bird’s wing brushes against the cover and slides along the cover and ONTO the arcing horns – resulting in a phase-to-phase or phase-to-ground event and blown fuse. The wing is physically guided across the covered part and right into the uncovered horns. 


Cutout covers that do not take avian biology into account will continue to allow unnecessary avian electrocutions and power outages.

Fortunately, the Power Line Sentry cutout cover is designed to stop this type of risk by blocking wing access to the arcing horns.  


The other main difference between a Power Line Sentry cutout cover and other cutout covers are the adjustable clips. These clips are what make our cutout covers both a universal solution and a secure solution.

The clips work like this: 

The clips slide into position easily – you just adjust the position of the clips based on the cutout you are covering and then snap the cover on the top portion of the cutout, and voila – you have a tight and secure fit.  


Even with cutout cover’s open design – for the purpose of covering the arcing horns don’t forget – you have a tight, secure cover even in high winds for sustained periods.

These adjustable clips are truly a unique design feature. Usually if you want a universal fit, you get a bulky cover – which is not a secure solution. These clips are how we achieve this combination between a universal fit and a tight fit. 


Additionally, you may have noticed various small holes on the cutout cover corners. These are where the linemen can attach their hot-stick to install our power line cutout covers on energized lines without the need to cover the energized circuits.

Both a hot-stick install and a manual install are quick and easy – there is no need for additional pins or clamps – you just slide the cover into position over the cutout and you’re good to go. 


Lastly, as with all Power Line Sentry system reliability solutions, the cutout cover is made with the most advanced material. This UV resistant polymer is engineered for durability and strength, it is V/0 compliant, and it has, of course, passed all relevant tests. 


It has a V-0 rating for the UL 94 flammability of plastic materials test, it passed at 24kV for the ASTM D-149 dielectric breakdown of voltage and strength, it passed at 60.78 ft-lbs/in2 the ASTM D-638 and D-1822 original tensile strength, and it has no visible color change >1,000 hours for the IEEE 1656 UV aging test. Check out the cut sheet for these details.
